Botox for a Gummy Smile

Twice as many women as men suffer from a “gummy smile” or a high smile line

A smile considered “gummy” is one that shows an excess of gingival tissue (3 mm or more) on smiling. An attractive smile is dependent on balance of the teeth, gums, and lips: the gum line follows the upper lip’s contour and the upper lip should only expose up to 3 mm of gum tissue.

There are three facial muscles that create a smile:

  • Zygomaticus minor
  • Levator Labii Superioris Alaeque Nasi
  • Levator Labii Superioris

Botox is injected above the smile to temporarily denervate the muscles that cause the upper lip to excessively lift. Effective Botox treatment for a gummy smile requires an injection at the the intersection of these three muscles, a triangular area called the Yonsei Point. Fact: Levator Labii Superioris means in latin “lifter of upper lip” Fact: Gummy Smile is defined as 3mm or more of gingival display (above the zenith) Fact: Most pleasing smile is where border of lip is right AT zenith Fact: Researchers consider this main lifter: Levator Labii Superioris Alaeque Nasi Typical Botox treatment for a gummy smile includes injections at the Yonsei Point on either side of the nose and lasts for around three months.
